A letter from Me to You

When I was younger and struggling in many ways, books were my refuge. I loved to read of other worlds where everything seemed so much deeper, where love was eternal and death had meaning, and of course reality could never quite keep up. It made real life feel very, very grey and distant. I felt like I was standing on the wrong side of a door nobody else could see, waiting for a letter that never came, for somebody to whisk me away into the fairytale I was so sure for so long was waiting for me just around the corner. Magic felt like the only thing that deserved to be real. The only thing that could save me.

But it didn’t, of course. No door opened, no letter arrived. And at some point I had to stop waiting and learn to sit with the darkness instead. Had to learn to live with my fears, my regrets, and with a reality that was never going to transform itself into something easier just because I wished for it. It really hurt. Losing the dream of what I thought life should be and being faced with what it really was felt hard. But over time, very slowly, I came to find that the darkness had its own kind of magic. And I scraped it together, bit by bit. A little bit of wonder in a place I never expected to find it.

That is why Sable & Ink is built from both. From the hope and the magic, but also from the dark and the scary, the stories that feel like home and the ones that remind you of what is lost. It’s a place where magic and darkness share a roof, and the door I’ve always wished for is finally wide open.

the person behind the blog

Hi, I'm Sable.

Teacher by day, gremlin by night. Lover of slow-burns, found-families of misfits, horror movies and quiet corners. If I'd never have to go outside again, that'd be fine by me. Although I do try to be more interesting these days and touch some grass once a month.

Perfection. I wish I could forget everything just to read it again and I 100% made it my whole personality. Will recommend this to you unprompted until you give in.

Amazing book! Thought about it for days even though I probably had other things to do. Would recommend.

I'm not mad about it, it was a good time. Worth reading if the premise interests you.

It exists and I read it, but I probably forgot most of it already. Might be for you if you're more forgiving than I am.

I hated reading it AND it made me angry enough to write about it. Won't recommend.

Neki is shy, with very loud opinions. She is scared of basically everything, but once she trusts you, she’s the silliest cat you'll meet. She’s a great judge of character, very stubborn, extremely lazy, and constantly starving because she has never once been fed in her whole life.
